Downes’ 322 wins at the helm also make him one of the most successful high school coaches in Massachusetts. In addition, his teams won six league championships, the 1963 Eastern Massachusetts state championship, and the 1988 Division 2 South Sectional title.

Russ’ experience as a United States Marine Corps medic during the Korean War provided the perspective that would serve him well throughout his coaching career. Russ had an excellent rapport with his teams and always displayed an even temperament on the field. He created a positive, cooperative atmosphere with his teams and was at his best when his team suffered a defeat. His love for baseball continues as he serves as a volunteer assistant for Westwood High School baseball.

Downes has touched the lives of many athletes over the years as he taught not only the game of baseball but many life lessons as well. Thank you, Russ Downes, for being such a wonderful, integral part of Westwood baseball.
