No Updates on New Library, But Project Moving Forward

While no new updates have surfaced regarding the New Westwood Library Project, the project itself is moving forward, and should begin by late fall.

A regular monthly meeting of the Westwood Library Trustees was cancelled this week, partly because of a lack of updates on the New Westwood Library Project, Library Director Tom Viti said Thursday.

But while there aren't any set dates for when things will begin moving, Viti said there is a general notion that the project will in fact begin by late fall.

"The bid documents should be out by then, and bids should be back by the middle of December, but I'm not 100 percent sure of the timing," Viti said.

But before the actual library project can break ground, the Colburn School will first need to be moved to the back of the parking lot at the site of the current library. At the moment, Westwood officials are looking to get that project out to bid by early fall.

"They're trying to get that set up for sometime no later than the end of November," Viti said. "We have to put that out to bid, but that will move faster than the other one."

Once the Colburn School has been moved, the lot will be cleared for construction of the new library. Then, after the new library is complete, the old library will be demolished, and the Colburn School will be moved onto that site.

While Viti was uncertain on when the move of the Colburn School would go out to bid, believed it would be sometime in September.
