Pulitzer Prize Author Tracy Kidder to Speak at Xaverian

Author Tracy Kidder will be a keynote speaker for the 2011 Xaverian community-wide read of Mountains Beyond Mountains Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m.

Kidder, a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, wrote this story of Dr. Paul Farmer's success in bringing health care to the poor in Haiti and beyond. The event is free and open to the public and put on by the Xaverian Parent Council.

A Newsweek review of Mountains Beyond Mountains, reminds us "that we're implicated in all the problems Farmer is working to solve. His complicated humanity only makes him more like the rest of us in our shortcomings - and leaves us asking why we all aren't a little more like him in our virtues" (Newsweek).

Dr. Paul Farmer, an ordinary man, is a hero for any age as he gives public witness of a life lived in the pursuit of justice and integrity. Dr. Farmer went down a difficult road others had not dared to go before he took the first step, and now many volunteers walk.

Dr. Farmer risked his reputation and job, to give voice to the voiceless. His life made real what others could only talk about. In the witness of Farmer's story we see how it is possible to serve the poor and marginalized rather than exploit them. He is a role model where the young can go to find the high ideals that nourish the spirit.

If you cannot attend the presentation Thursday night, it will be streamed live online through the XBHS website at www.xbhs.com.
