Westwood to Celebrate United Nations Day

The Westwood Board of Selectmen has signed a proclamation in recognition of United Nations Day on Oct. 24.

On Sunday, October 24, Westwood residents driving through town will notice an extra flag hanging overhead at the Town Hall and Westwood Fire Department.

The flag is that of the United Nations, and will be hung in recognition of United Nations Day.

The Westwood Board of Selectmen read and signed a proclamation last week to officially acknowledge the day, which falls on October 24 every year.

The proclamation is being sent to the Massachusetts State House for celebrations that will take place on October 28 from 12 to 2 p.m. Those celebrations will be open to the public and will include a reading of Gov. Deval Patrick's proclamation, as well as a keynote address and musical entertainment.

While Westwood does not hold an event in addition to the flag hanging, town officials wish to show their support for the day, as well as support the Millennium Development goals that the UN is focusing on this year.

"Our recognition of this day is intended to reflect our support of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations," said Board of Selectmen Chair Nancy Hyde.

The goals range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV and AIDS, as well as and providing universal primary education. The UN has a target date of completing the goals by 2015.
