Westwood Police Warn Residents of Unsolicited Calls

The warning comes after a recent scam in which a caller asked a resident for money.

The on Wednesday warned residents to be careful when accepting certain unsolicited calls.

Specifically, the department is warning citizens to be diligent when accepting calls regarding lottery winnings, home improvement repairs, and other situations in which the caller may pose as a friend or family member in need of money.

The warning comes after a recent incident in Westwood involving a resident who received a call from a young woman who claimed to be the resident's granddaughter, police said in a statement Wednesday morning.

The caller allegedly reported that she was out of the country and in need of money to repair a rental vehicle she was operating, police said. The caller then asked the resident to send her money via Western Union.

Furthermore, police are warning that individuals that make such calls and engage in a similar type of scam can be convincing and appear legitimate, and as such officials are asking residents to heighten their awareness when receiving a call of the same nature.
