Westwood's Week in Review

Rounding out the week in news: August 30 - September 5.

The State Primary elections are right around the corner, and congressional and State Senate candidates are gearing up for what is promising to be a heated election night. Several candidates went head-to-head this past week to discuss several pressing issues that lie on the minds of many residents.

Democrats Stephen Lynch and Mac D'Alessandro debated the economy, the war in Afghanistan and health care reform on WBZ-TV last weekend. The two were also supposed to speak side-by-side at a candidate's forum in Dedham this past week, but D'Alessandro went it alone with Vernon Harrison, due to an absent Lynch and candidate Keith Lapor.

Meanwhile, State Senate candidates at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, during which they discussed the state's failed casino bill, the Massachusetts Ethics Commission, and health care reform.

Initial work began for the preparations of the New Westwood Library Project this past week, with the clearing of the wooded lot behind the Colburn School. And after a meeting this past week, the Westwood Sewer Commission announced that the town's sewer rates for FY '10-'11 would remain the same.

Westwood officials began the weekend by preparing for what turned out to be a rather weak Hurricane Earl, but the lack of a heavy storm allowed for the town to embrace a quiet Labor Day weekend. The weekend did, however, start out rough for a Whitewood Road man who fell off his ladder and on to his porch, after which Emergency Medical Service crews took him to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

A number of sports teams in Westwood geared up for their respective fall seasons last week. The Westwood High School football team had a strong start in a scrimmage against Norwood, while the Xaverian Brothers High School soccer team fell short in a scrimmage against Sharon.

The High School girls' soccer team, however, is looking for a competitive season ahead, and the Westwood field hockey team is looking to improve their offense. With school beginning for Westwood on Wednesday, September 7, the fall season is nearly here!
