Week in Review: August 9 - 15

With the tax-free holiday this weekend about to come to a close, find out how local businesses in the Westwood are prepared for the event with sales and extra open hours.

Westwood Patch spoke to Matt Sims this past week, a local resident and counselor at Hale Reservation, who is trying to raise funds for a colleague's educational program in Ethiopia.

Children and their parents took to the sandy shores of Hale Reservation's Membership Beach on Wednesday to engage in a kid's triathlon. Hale also received a hefty donation from Dedham Savings, which will be used to advance the reservation's aquatics program.

The Westwood Planning Board approved the application for construction of a garage at Prevett Oil on East Street, which will be used for the storage and maintenance for several of the company's vehicles, as well as to store materials and office supplies.

Meanwhile, renovations to the roadway at Thurston Middle School, which were planned to be completed this month, have been postponed until next summer.

Bubbling Brook was the newest restaurant to be featured in our Meet the Chefs column, which ran on Wednesday.

We also continued a series of articles looking into how local teachers are spending this summer. The most recent installment featured Mike Mao, who has been traveling in South America for much of the summer.

In sports, the Westwood 11-year-old Suburban Youth Baseball League made it to the semifinals, but were later knocked out of the tournament by Wellesley.
