Self-Defense Summer Classes Come to Westwood

Women's self defense and adult karate classes begin July 12 and run through August.

While July brings with it the start of programs like the Westwood Summer Concert Series, as well as a number of child-related activities at the Town Library, it is also the month in which adults can strengthen their self-defense skills.

Starting Monday, July 12, any female Westwood resident from the age of 16 and older will have the chance to join the newly-established self-defense program at the Islington Community Center.

"Self-defense is not just to prepare you for the one time in your life you might have a scary encounter. Self-defense should be an integral part of your life," according to a statement on the Town Hall website announcing the new program. "Physical defense will always part of the game plan. Sometimes you have no choice. But when you are your personal best, your most important self-defense weapon is your well-prepared mind."

Students will learn how to enhance their awareness of their environment as well as learn how to recognize warnings of abuse and danger.

Classes begin on July 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Islington Community Center Hall. The program costs $90 for a five-class session.

Meanwhile, also at the Islington Community Center, adults from age 16 and up will have the chance to indulge in an adulte karate program, instructed by Steve DiOrio. Students will learn the technique of Uechi-Ryu karate, which focuses on training of the body, the mind, and in self defense to include timing, distancing and accuracy.

Classes for adult karate being July 12 directly after Women's Self Defense from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Both programs must have at least five participants register by Saturday, July 10 or they will be cancelled. Fore more information and to register, visit the Town of Westwood website.
