Restoring History With the Obed Baker House

The Dedham Institution for Savings awarded a grant last year to help restore the interior of the house.

Ever wonder what that big red house is next to Dunkin Donuts on High Street?

It's the site of a historical restoration project in Westwood, known as the Obed Baker House.

The home itself was built at 965 High St. in 1812 by the Westwood resident of the same name, and was actually moved for a short period to 1007 High St., where it remained until 2001. It was eventually moved to 909 High St.

The house is the property of the Westwood Historical Society, which has worked to restore it to its original form in an effort to provide students with a historical hands-on look at a 19th century household.

Ultimately, restoring the house's interior will cost about $400,000 to complete, and last year the Dedham Institution for Savings awarded the Westwood Historical Society a grant to help with the efforts.
