Memorial Day Weekend: Schedule of Events

A look at what's to come this weekend for Memorial Day in Westwood.

That's right, it's that time of year again - Memorial Day weekend is here. A true sign that summer is on the horizon, the weekend is celebrated heavily in Westwood, with two volunteer events taking place prior to the highly-anticipated annual parade on Monday.

Here's a roundup of what's taking place this weekend:

  • A was held Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., during which volunteers were welcomed to the to help lay new flags on the graves of veterans. This was followed by a trip to the Old Westwood Cemetery, where the volunteers continued their flag-laying efforts.
  • A will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, when volunteers will have the chance to help plant geraniums along the graves at both the New and Old Westwood Cemeteries.
  • On Monday, the annual will kick off at the front of at 10 a.m. More than 800 of Westwood's veterans have been invited to march in the parade
    • The event will feature appearances by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution, as well as the Color Guard, and the 's Color Guard and Piper.
    • Bands from and , as well as the Windjammer and Roma Bands will participate.
    • Chris McKeown, Director of Veteran's Services, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the parade.
    • Honored guests include Chair Pat Ahearn and U.S. Navy Captain Beth Ahearn will be the Parade Marshall.
    • Megan Colby, an eighth grader at Thurston Middle School, will recite the Gettysberg Address.
