Memorial Day Volunteers Refresh Veterans' Graves

Town Officials and residents replaced American Flags on the graves of veterans on Friday, and will plant flowers along the site Saturday.

may be two days away, but that doesn't mean Westwood's finest are waiting until then to show their spirit.

On Friday morning at around 9:30 a handful of Westwood Officials and a few residents were on hand at the New Westwood Cemetery, where they worked to replace old American Flags with new ones on the grave sites of fallen Westwood veterans.

The volunteer effort takes place each year before Memorial Day, said Paula Scoble, wife of Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble, who was also present on Friday, laying both American Flags and flags honoring fallen firefighters.

The effort comprises two parts, the first being on Friday and the second taking place Saturday morning, both starting at 9:30 in the New Westwood Cemetery before moving over to the Old Westwood Cemetery. On Saturday, volunteers will plant geraniums at each grave site where a flag was replaced, Scoble said.

While a handful of folks were on site Friday, more were expected to appear on Saturday, Scoble said, as it is a weekend day and less people are apt to be working. A group of Westwood Boy Scouts will be on hand, she said.

"It's a community thing," Scoble said.

Town Administrator Mike Jaillet, Police Chief William Chase and Westwood Human Resources Director Mary Beth Bernard were all present to lend a hand Friday, as were a group of Westwood natives.

"It made a tremendous difference of the overall look of the cemetery," said Westwood resident Joe Gantert. "It was worth doing."

Volunteers are welcome to return to the area Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The effort will again take place at the New and Old Westwood Cemeteries.
