Library Launches Second Teen Program

Library, teen programs, volunteer

The Westwood Public Library today announced the formation of a Teen Advisory Board (TAB).  Developed specifically for middle- and high-school students, the board will play an active role in running the Young Adult Department at the new library, and joins the Jr. FOL to become the library’s second program aimed at teens.

“We see TAB as an open forum where teens can meet regularly to have a say in what happens in the YA area of the library,” said Teresa Kerrigan, Reference/Teen Librarian.  “They will really have a chance to make a difference in guiding and improving teen services.”

Kerrigan says the group will help run the library’s Teen Scene Facebook page, develop the summer reading program as well as research and suggest ideas for possible teen happenings at the library.

“We also envision the teens suggesting reading materials that we can add to the collection, organizing book displays and, perhaps, setting up a computer tutoring program for peers and younger students,” said Kerrigan.  “It is, however, up to the board to decide what they will do.”

The program is open to all students in grades seven to twelve and will meet regularly on short Wednesdays.

Kerrigan added that interested students are welcome to join both the TAB and the Jr. FOL.

Interested teens should send an email to wwdmail1@minlib.net and can check the library Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WestwoodLibrary for details.
