Wolverines Defeat Algonquin for State Title

Friday's offensive onslaught powered the Westwood girls lacrosse team to another championship.

It started close, but in a flash it was a rout. The Westwood girls lacrosse team picked apart Algonquin Regional High School and flew out to a 10-goal halftime lead en route to a dominant 20-6 victory to claim the Division 1 State Championship Friday night at Foley Field in Worcester. The championship was the fourth for the senior class in the last five years. The Wolverines were led by senior Laura McHoul, who finished her career in the green and white with a flourish. McHoul netted seven goals and assisted on four goals in the win. “The whole team was on and everyone was clicking,” McHoul said. “Our intensity on the field was good, and our chemistry was good. The Wolverines will play the winner of Tuesday's game between Algonquin and Longmeadow Friday night in Worcester for the state championship. “It feels really good,” Westwood senior Kate Rich said. “I’m really proud of the girls for hanging in there and pulling out a win.” Rich had a pair of goals in the first half and played a key role in Westwood’s domination of the first 25 minutes. The Westwood Wolverines walked away with the boys’ league title beating Norton by only 3.67 points while the Hopkinton Hillers once again won the girls meet. “This meet is not necessarily about how many first places you get. It’s about depth and we’re very lucky to have a lot of great finishes across the board,” Westwood boys’ head coach Joe Mascia said. “These guys have worked tirelessly since the beginning of the season so they deserve it.” Bobby McLaughlin came up big for the Wolverines, completing one of the toughest double efforts, winning the mile and the two-mile. “He ran two really great races …
