Westwood High Named National Blue Ribbon High School

WHS one of 38 high schools in the country to be identified as "Exemplary High Performing" by U.S. Department of Education.

This past Friday, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that Westwood High School had been named a 2012 National Blue Ribbon High School. The designation as “Exemplary High Performing” was one that just 38 high schools, both public and private, across the country achieved, and is the highest honor a United States school can receive from the U.S. Department of Education. “It’s really a remarkable achievement,” Westwood High Principal Sean Bevan said. “It reiterates what I already knew: Westwood High is a unique and terrific place to send your kid. I’m just really thrilled.” National Blue Ribbon Status is earned by looking at the results of state assessments or national-normed tests. But Bevan doesn’t want WHS to be limited by …

Photo & Video Gallery: Westwood Football Opening Night

Despite a strong effort, Wolverines can't defeat a tough Bedford team and fall, 34-18.

It was played before a packed house, and you knew every single person there wanted to see the game. Afterall, you don't wait through an hour weather delay before the game even starts if you're not excited for the beginning of the season. With lightning spotted just north of Westwood, officials decided to err on the side of caution and delay the game. It was also the game where Pop Warner football players and cheerleaders were to be honored at halftime. They wound up doing this prior to the game, with each player's name being called over the public address system, while the young cheerleaders performed a routine with the high school team. Bedford had a high powered offense that looks like it's capable of putting up a lot of points, but …

5 Things Westwood Should Know: September 10

Here's a list of things that you'll be glad you know if you live in Westwood.

1. The Board of Selectmen will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. There will be some talk about the library's opening schedule, as well as an update on University Station and Westwood Day. 2. Be sure to check out our photos and videos from Westwood's football opener on Friday night. While the score didn't go the Wolverine's way, we can be sure Coach Mantie and the team will be hard at work this week as they move forward. 3. The football season wouldn't be complete without the dedication and hard work of the Westwood High School cheerleaders. They help lead the crowd each week on the sidelines, but they're also perfecting their routines for when it's time for their competitions. Make sure you take a look at Coach Heather Brown's blog. …

Westwood High Named Best in State by Boston Magazine

Evaluation of 230 public high schools in Greater Boston determined that Westwood is 13th best high school in Massachusetts.

Boston Magazine recently gathered data from all 230 public high schools in the Greater Boston area to determine which schools are the best, and they determined that Westwood is the 13th best school in the state. Data gathered included test scores, number of AP classes, graduation rate, percentage of students who continue on to college, as well as the number of sports teams and clubs. Per pupil spending and student to teacher ratio were included in the rankings, but less weight was given to them as recent studies have shown that those are not as important factors in quality of education. You can access the main page of Boston Magazine's Best Schools and then go from there to see some other charts related to the rankings with various types …

Aged Wood Lacrosse Squad Falls to Atlantic Sportswear, 7-6

The Maine-based team took home the victory, leaving Westwood's mens lacrosse team hungry for next week's game against the Salty Old Buzzards from Marion.

Editor's Note: The following was submitted by Aged Wood goalkeeper John Hauck. The first loss of the season was a painful one for Westwood's Aged Wood Lacrosse Club Tuesday night on the Flahive Field at Westwood High School.   The Atlantic Sportswear (ASW) team from Maine, historically one of the strongest in the Old New England Lacrosse League (O.N.E.L.L.), ultimately took home the 7-6 win. We were eager to showcase that our young team (in our second year of existence) could compete with the best.   After a number of problems getting the game underway, AWLC took control immediately with a quick 3-0 lead, the leadoff goal coming from Greg Mahoney with an underhand shot low and off stick side, followed up by fellow midfielders Mike Stanton …
