A math contest brought Westwood's Elementary students to pit their skill in calculation against one another.
The 5th annual Math Meet brough more than 160 Westwood Elementary School students togehter on Wednesday to pit their math skills against one another. "You get bored talking about it, this way you get to practice with your friends," Zach Conway, a 3rd grade student said at the event. The using group collaboration problem-solving and speed rounds, students enthusiastically solved equations in a subject students are sometimes less than passionate about, event coordinators said. "We tell folks, this isn't just for the smart kids, this is for everybody. This is enrichment," John Cummings, a volunteer at the event, said.

Passionate teacher encourages students to explore other cultures and will lead trip to Peru in February, where they will visit remnants of ancient civilization, learn about Peruvian culture and volunteer at a poverty-stricken elementary school.
This February, when most Westwood High School students will be using their vacation time to hang out with their friends around town, Spanish teacher Katelyn Testa will be taking 19 students to Peru to visit historic sites, see the culture firsthand and spend time at an impoverished elementary school. “Peru is just amazing,” said Testa, the energetic seventh year Westwood High teacher. “I told the kids, ‘this opportunity might not come up again.’” Which is one of the main reasons many of the students decided to go on this trip. “Peru seems really different and interesting,” said Izzy Donabed, a sophomore going on the trip. “It’s different than going to France or Spain because it’s more difficult to get to Peru and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime …

Massachusetts had an adjusted graduation rate of 83 percent for the 2010-2011 school year, while Westwood High School's adjusted graduation rate that year was 98.9 percent.
Massachusetts didn't make the top 10 high school graduation rates in the nation, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, but Westwood schools have a higher graduation rate than the state average. The graduation rates released Monday are for the 2010-2011 school year—the first year for which all states used a common, adjusted four-year cohort graduation rate, according to a U.S. Department of Education press release. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) spokesman JC Considine told Patch in an e-mail that Massachusetts has been computing cohort graduation rates since 2006, which are available on the DESE website. Westwood High School being honored in Washington, D.C. this week along with 37 other high schools as "Exemplary Performing."
Earlier this year it was announced that Westwood High School had been named a Blue Ribbon School, one of 38 schools receiving an "Exemplary Performing" status from the Secretary of Education. Now, two months later, the National Awards Ceremony is taking place. Principal Sean Bevan is there, as is social studies teach Jonas Sherr, who was chosen by department heads as the teacher to represent the high school faculty. "It's definitely a great honor to represent the faculty," Sherr said in an email last week. "We have a tremendous group of teachers here. Westwood High School held a school-wide mock election last Friday. A look at those results compared to the official Town of Westwood election results.
On November 2, just four days before the residents of the Town of Westwood would cast their ballots, students and staff at Westwood High School participated in a mock election for President and U.S. Senate that was organized by the school's Legislative Council. "It's important to give students a chance to see what it's like in a real election and to get a sense of what students think," Jake Greenberg, a junior in his third year on the Legislative Council, said. The United States is made up of people who have brought portions of their culture from all over the world. Whether newly immigrated to America or a member of a family that has been here for generations, many people often keep part of the culture that their ancestors cultivated in the countries or parts of the world where they originally came from. Westwood High School senior Kimberly Huang has been involved in the Chinese cultural arts since she was about 4-years-old, participating in Chinese dance, martial arts (Wushu) and music. Among those spotted in the crowd at the reincarnation of Westwood Day this weekend were: Westwood officials, smiling families, Gail Huff, State Rep. Paul McMurtry, a clown on stilts, and many more.
It was a day filled with fun, laughs, smiles and more. The revitalized Westwood Day - an event the town had not celebrated for more than 20 years - arrived on Saturday at Westwood High School. A Vendor Village offering various items and fun experiences, live entertainment, food, demonstrations, and other items were available for all to enjoy. And nearly everywhere one could spot the creative Westwood Day logo that was designed by Westwood High School senior Danielle Kaplan. Here are five things you should know right here in Westwood.
1. A reminder to all parents with children in the Westwood Public Schools- tomorrow is an early release day. The Deerfield School will get out at 11:25 a.m., while the other elementary schools will get out at 11:50 a.m. The High School will be released at 12:40 p.m. and the middle school will let out at 1:10 p.m. 2. Westwood High School was named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Schools don't achieve this honor without having excellent teachers.
