The Westwood Board of Selectmen composed a list of issues and potential solutions to discuss moving forward in an effort to enhance safety for those passing under the bridge.
The East Street bridge. It's been a topic of concern among Westwood residents for some time. Many recently voiced their concerns over traveling under the bridge at a Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Committee meeting in late June, and now the matter is on the Westwood Board of Selectmen's radar. "We began to notice and hear about a lot of issues relating to the East Street bridge," Westwood Town Administrator Mike Jaillet told Westwood Patch on Wednesday. "We had started talking about it internally among the staff." Those discussions began shortly after an MBTA became stuck under the bridge in May, an incident that resulted in many area residents being evacuated due to the leak of natural gas tanks that were attached to the bus's roof. "We …

The project will also feature an additional stop sign and a "Keep Right" sign on the new island.
Westwood officials are moving forward with a new permanent traffic island after testing one out for a 30-day trial last month. The Westwood Board of Selectmen Monday night approved the Westwood Department of Public Works to resume the project, which entails installation of a traffic island at the corner of Farm Lane, Pleasant Valley Road and Conifer Lane. "The concept was designed by [Beta Group, Inc.] with the traffic issues in mind," said DPW Deputy Director Chris Gallagher at Monday night's Selectmen meeting. The design comprises a vertical granite curbing along with the concrete island, additional pavement markings and new traffic and stop signs. The total cost of the project is estimated to be less than $1,000, according to …

BiBi's Cafe will be taking over the old building on High Street.
The building known as Anne's Lunch on High Street in Westwood will soon be transformed into a new establishment. In what could be as early as Thanksgiving, a new eatery known as BiBi's Cafe will reside on the High Street lot. The Westwood Planning Board has granted Environmental Impact & Design Review (EIDR) approval for the project, which includes the construction of the new, two-story building in place of Anne's Lunch. BiBi's will include 16 seats on the first floor, according to Westwood Town Planner Nora Loughnane. The second floor will house a bakery to produce fresh breads and baked goods for the restaurant, but will not be used to sell directly to the public. There will also not be a retail take-out counter, Loughnane said. A …

Sgt. Joseph Vinci moved up the ladder within the department this week.
In a special ceremony during the Westwood Board of Selectmen's meeting Monday night, local officials were delighted to promote the Westwood Police Department's own Joseph Vinci to the role of sergeant. Vinci, who grew up in Westwood, graduated from Westwood High School in 1998. During his time there, he played for the Wolverines football team and was a member of the National Honor Society. He later graduated from Dartmouth College before eventually landing at the Westwood Police Department in 2006, when he was assigned to general patrol duties. Throughout his career, Vinci received a number of commendations and letters of recommendations, and in 2010 was assigned to train and enter new officers into the department. Town Clerk Dottie …

The island is part of a 30-day trial to help alleviate traffic concerns.
Work has begun on a 30-day trial version of a new traffic island at the intersection of Farm Lane, Conifer Lane and Pleasant Valley Road in Westwood. Traffic barrels, barriers and signs form the basis of the island, the building of which was approved last week by the Westwood Board of Selectmen. The project itself was proposed by the Westwood Department of Public Works to help offset heavy flow of traffic that spills over from High Street during peak commuting hours. "The cones that are set up are there to mark up the center line in the road," Westwood DPW Deputy Director Chris Gallagher said. "But in order to give people a real idea of what's there without doing permanent marks we set the cones up on a temporary basis." The island, he …

The tasting will run from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 8.
Patrons of High Street Market learned this spring that, come the summer time, they would be able to purchase beer and wine at the store. Now, with products on the shelves, the store is ready to celebrate being Westwood's first establishment to sell alcohol off its shelves, not including restaurants in town that have held licenses to serve alcohol. The Westwood Board of Selectmen on Monday approved for High Street Market to hold extended hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 8 for a celebratory wine tasting event. The store normally closes at 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. "My whole point of doing it after hours was so that I could talk with more of my customers, versus when the store is open," store owner Liz Adams said Monday night. "I…

A 30-day trial island will be installed within a week to help alleviate traffic concerns near Pleasant Valley Road and Conifer Lane.
Discussions on how to alleviate traffic congestion from the High Street/Rte. 109 area in Westwood have been ongoing for quite a while now. The bulk of those conversations have revolved around traffic-calming measures for the Dover Road and Conant Road area, which bears the brunt of spillover traffic from High Street during peak commuting hours. More recently, officials opted to look into how to alleviate traffic on Rte. 109 from Summer Street all the way to Lowder Brook Drive. Now attention has been turned to the intersection at Farm Lane, Pleasant Valley Road and Conifer Lane, where the Westwood Department of Public Works has proposed the installation of a traffic island to help alleviate traffic concerns. "There are traffic concerns on …

I think the long term solution should not involve restructuring the height of the bridge. The height of the bridge does divert truck traffic away from the area, which is a benefit considering the narrow Washington/East St intersection and playground/fields in the area. I think the focus should be a pedestrian solution (steps or ramp around/up and over the bridge/tracks and restrict pedestrians …   more ›
