As the country observes Veterans Day today, let's share stories and thoughts about the veterans in our lives.
Veterans Day, which marks the anniversary of the end of World War I, honors all veterans, alive and dead. Maybe you have today off from work. Maybe you don't. Either way, we encourage you to take a few moments to help us honor local veterans. Westwood Patch, as a meeting place for community information and conversation, has a blogging platform that we'd love to see filled today and this week with stories about or tributes to the veteran(s) in your lives. To share a story about a veteran in our local voices section, click here. Or, add a comment to the end of this article. I used our blogging platform last month to pay tribute to my 89-year-old grandfather, Armand Descoteau: a World War II veteran who recently received France's highest …

One relatively normal Veterans Day in Westwood also marked the marriage of a Norwood couple.
November has come and gone, but for one local couple, it was a November to remember. On Friday, Nov. 11 (also referred to as 11/11/11), a large number of residents gathered at Veterans Park to celebrate Veterans Day 2011. But just around the corner, up the hill at the Westwood Gazebo, located at the Westwood Senior Center, Dan Kazachkov and his fiance Shauna Basil were celebrating a new life together. And choosing 11/11/11 was not coincidence. "We spoke of that date before," said Kazachkov, a Norwood resident who is also the owner of the Dental Arts of Westwood on High Street. Originally, the couple planned to wed at Veterans Park to commemorate the date, as Shauna is currently serving in the U.S. Navy. When they discovered the town'…

Officials and residents gathered at Veterans Park on Friday morning to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Cold and blustery winds graced the area of Veterans Park in Westwood on Friday. But the brisk air wasn't enough to keep residents and officials from honoring the town's heroes for Veterans Day 2011. Friday's annual service included thoughts and prayers from the likes American Legion Post 320 Commander Dick Paster, as well as Veterans Agent Chris McKeown and Board of Selectmen Chair Pat Ahearn, who took a moment to thank State Sen. Mike Rush for currently serving overseas. Aspiring Eagle Scout Kiernan Somers also took some time to thank those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and dedicated a Liberty Tree to the town's veterans. "[The Liberty Tree] was the symbol of the revolution and the American Spirit," Somers said. Those who …
