Week in Review

A Suspended Liquor License, Tornado Relief, and Rising Temperatures

A look at the week in news in Westwood.

Things kicked off interestingly this week in Westwood, as the Westwood Board of Selectmen voted in favor of a liquor license suspension for Blue Orchid, an employee at which was recently caught serving a beer to a minor.  In an interview with Westwood Patch, Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble discussed his trip out to Brimfield after a tornado hit the area on June 1. Scoble led search and rescue efforts for Brimfield, and described the area as "widespread destruction." While there were no threats of tornadoes this past week, there were some severe thunderstorms that hit the area, subsequent some soaring temperatures that reached into the 90s. Westwood Fire Chief Led Search, Rescue Efforts After Brimfield Tornado

Westwood Chief William Scoble helped lead efforts after last week's tornado destroyed several areas in Western Mass.

Homes destroyed, campgrounds overturned, trees uprooted, roads blocked. Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble has seen quite a bit of destruction in his career. But the devastation left in the wake of last week's tornado that hit areas in Western Massachusetts was nothing short of a new experience.  "I've never seen that much widespread damage before," said Scoble in his office on Tuesday. "Complete and total destruction." Norfolk County currently has three task forces that can be utilized in the event of a disaster, Scoble said: 4A, 4B and 4C. Westwood belongs to the 4B Task Force, which Scoble led last week alongside Wrentham Fire Chief James McMorrow; both served as the task force commanders.  Based on a run-card emergency response system…

Storm Leaves Little Damage, Power Outages in Westwood

A few power outages were reported Thursday as a result of Wednesday's storm.

Despite nearly a 12 hour-long tornado watch and an added tornado warning from the National Weather Service, area storms on Wednesday caused little, if any, damage in Westwood.  While a handful of damaging tornadoes touched down in various areas of Western Massachusetts as a result of the storms, the biggest threat in Westwood were various power outages. "We were watching (the storm) carefully, and watching the path," said Vicki Quiram, Director of the Westwood Department of Public Works, which was relying on a back-up generator for power as of early Thursday morning. "We still have a power outage on this side of town." Quiram said that sewer crews were working to ensure that generators and pumps were working to ensure there were no sewer …
