The Top Chefs of Westwood

A look at some of the folks in Westwood who devote themselves to the art of food.

Last summer, when Westwood Patch first launched, one of the initial features we brought to light was our Meet the Chefs series.  The feature profiled local chefs and restaurant owners in the Westwood area - those who look to food as their way of life, bringing their experiences with cooking and living with food into town.  And, so, this week's Patch Picks will put the spotlight on a few of those who do all they can to bring you the best in food.  Steve LaCount - Chiara Bistro: Steve LaCount's passion for cooking began through inspiration he gained from his grandmother while growing up in Roslindale (he eventually opened Chiara Bistro and named the Westwood restaurant after her). Alongside fellow chef Bret Pelaggi, LaCount brings dishes …

Family Ownership a Driving Force Behind Islington Pizza

Maria Tassiopoulos, owner of Islington Pizza, started the business with her family, and a family atmosphere has helped the business thrive.

There are certain aspects of every good restaurant that jump out and make it special. In the case of Islington Pizza, it's not only buffalo chicken pizza, but also the friendly, family atmosphere. Maria Tassiopoulos, owner of the restaurant, among other titles, has been in the pizza business for as long as she can remember.   On December 26, 1995, she opened Islington Pizza with her family, which includes her parents, brother and sister. Since the age of 12, she had been helping out with the family business, doing odd jobs around the establishment. "It's a family ownership," Tassiopoulos said. "And that's not just it. There is a low employee turnover, with some guys working here for several years. It is very family friendly - there's even …

Vello's Owner Offers Fun, Not Fancy Dining

For eight years, owner Victor Servello has fueled the local restaurant with a long-standing passion for cooking.

This is part of an on-going series profiling local chefs and sharing their favorite summer recipes. Victor Servello may have a marketing degree under his belt, but his real passion is in food. "I think it was the initial just working in restaurants," said Servello, 33, owner of Vello's Restaurant at 679 High St. "Getting bit by the restaurant bug and loving it, and wanting to be around it all the time." Servello, a Westwood native and Allston resident, was fueled with motivation to run his own restaurant early on, after working as a cook for years in the Boston area. "Basically, I had been working in restaurants, cooking in restaurants in Boston, nothing fine dining or anything, but just cooking in pubs and bar-kind of places that served …

Local Chef Brings a Taste of Influence to Chiara Bistro

Head chef and owner Steve LaCount reveals how his passion for cooking led him to run one of Westwood's most successful restaurants.

This is the first in a series profiling local chefs and sharing their favorite summer recipes. For Steve LaCount, it all started in Roslindale. It was there, at the house of his grandmother, Chiara Benedetti, that he was first smitten by the world of cooking. "She (Benedetti) was a big influence on me getting into cooking originally," said LaCount, owner and executive chef of Chiara Bistro on High Street in Westwood. The restaurant is named appropriately after his grandmother. LaCount said Benedetti and his grandfather would grow fresh vegetables in a massive garden outside their Roslindale home when LaCount was a child. There, they would pick fresh produce daily and then use the ingredients to cook for 15 or 16 people on a nightly basis…
