TELL US: How Would You Feel About Having a Marijuana Dispensary in Town?

The medical marijuana ballot initiative passed on Tuesday, which means up to 35 medical marijuana dispensaries can open in 2013. Would you be OK with having one in town?

Medical marijuana is coming to Massachusetts. The question is: where? The medical marijana ballot initiative that passed in Tuesday's election with 63 percent voter approval means that up to 35 medical marijuana dispensaries can open up in the state in 2013. The new law goes into effect Jan. 1, but requires rules and regulations be set up by the Department of Public Health.  Some towns and cities, such as Quincy, reportedly are already trying to line up regulations that would keep dispensaries out of their municipalities, which have proved troublesome in some of the nine states where medical marijuana dispensaries have been legal. What do you think? Tell us in our comments section below.

Candidates Forum Addresses Ballot Questions on Assisted Suicide, Marijuana

Arguments on both sides of ballot questions 2 and 3 were heard Thursday night at a Candidates Forum co-hosted by the League of Women Voters of Westwood, Norwood and Walpole.

On Thursday night, the League of Women Voters of Norwood, Westwood and Walpole held a Candidates Forum at the Norwood Town Hall for local voters to hear about their candidates and some of the issues on the ballot this November. The League invited speakers on each side (pro and con) of the vote for ballot questions 2 and 3 - the legalization of assisted suicide in Massachusetts and the legalization of medical Marijuana in Massachusetts. Question 2: Prescribing Medication to End Life. This law "would allow a physician licensed in Massachusetts to prescribe medication, at a terminally ill patient’s request, to end that patient’s life." The act would require that patients are mentally capable of making this decision and orally communicate it …

The Massachusetts Medical Society and most Mass doctors oppose question 2. It changes the role of a doctor from a healer to someone who causes a death. In the Netherlands this sort of thing started out 20 years ago as this measure does . . . for the terminally ill. Now they are into full-fledged euthanasia, putting people to death who can't speak for themselves. This is a dangerous slippery slope.   more ›
