Before Hurricane Sandy's full scope of devastation in New York and New Jersey was even known, 25 men and women from the Massachusetts State Police were on their way to assist those who had been displaced from their homes. "When I reached out to ask if the state police would be willing to field a group of 25 people, I already knew the answer," Undersecretary for Homeland Security and Director of MEMA, Kurt Schwartz said in a press conference in Framingham Monday afternoon. Troopers from all over New England want to help local drivers stay safe and prevent crashes during the holiday season.
The holidays are upon us, and many residents will be traveling this week to see family and friends all across New England. State Police are doing their part to help ensure these visits don't end in tragedy because of impaired or distracted driving. The Massachusetts State Police joined forces with other New England State Police divisions at headquarters in Framingham today to explain their C.A.R.E program. The state of New Jersey asked for help with devastation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, requesting that nearby states send law enforcement officers to help keep peace and order in the hardest-hit areas of New Jersey. A detachment of 25 troopers from the Massachusetts State Police was selected and sent on Saturday, reporting to Fort Dix to be sworn in as police officers. Updated at 9:30 a.m. on August 21: Daniel Timmons, a 39-year-old man from Stoughton, was driving a 2002 Honda motorcycle traveling southbound on Route 95/Route 128 at Route 1 in Westwood when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed off the shoulder of the roadway. The accident occurred at 4 p.m. on Monday, August 20. Timmons was transported by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with what was originally reported as life-threatening injuries. However, in a followup release Tuesday morning, the State Police said it appears Timmons’ injuries are not life-threatening in nature. A Westwood teen allegedly fled police in a stolen motor vehicle from South Boston to Burlington before crashing into a Jersey barrier last night. According to the Massachusetts State Police at approximately 9:30 p.m. last night troopers from the Massachusetts State Police received a report from the Boston police of a stolen motor vehicle that had fled a traffic stop on L Street in South Boston. Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Boston located the stolen vehicle on William Day Boulevard and attempted to stop the vehicle. The Massachusetts State Police will operate a Sobriety Checkpoint this upcoming weekend in Norfolk County. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," Colonel Marian J. A 16-year-old escaped the hospital on Thursday morning after stealing an employee badge.
A 16-year-old male who walked away from Westwood Lodge early Thursday morning was found at South Station before noontime. Massachusetts State Police assisted Westwood Police with a K-9 unit at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday to search for the teen, who allegedly walked away from the hospital after stealing an employee badge to do so, according to a State Police statement. In addition to a K-9 unit, State Police assisted Westwood Police with a State Police Air Wing. A Winter Weather Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook have been issued for Saturday afternoon.
Following a small accumulation of snow overnight Thursday into Friday, the National Weather Service is expecting a more significant storm to make its way to New England during the day Saturday. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m., and it is forecasted that during that time, snow will overspread Southern New England, including Westwood, with the majority of snowfall to take place from mid-morning to early afternoon. "Snow will accumulate quickly as the ground is already cold," the advisory stated. "Untreated surfaces will become slippery quickly." As temperatures in Westwood and throughout the region began to drop to a more average level for the month of December on Wednesday, Massachusetts State Police issued a warning about driving in poor weather conditions. A Massachusetts state police trooper is in the hospital following a crash late Thursday night on the Canton/Westwood line. According to State Police Spokesman David Procopio, the accident occurred on 128 south, north of I-95 on the Canton/Westwood line. The trooper's cruiser was hit during "a detail escort of a construction crane (Thursday night,)" Procopio said.
