Baseball a Neverending Story in Westwood

End of summer signals start of Fall baseball in town.

With three regions spanning 29 towns, it is fairly unnecessary to say that competition in the summer Suburban Youth Baseball League is pretty tough. Reaching the postseason and tournament play in any of the league's age levels is a sure sign of a successful summer on the diamond, regardless of how long the team survives in the ultra-competitive tournaments. With that in mind, it is safe to say the future looks pretty bright for baseball in town as Westwood had not only one but two teams advance all the way to the Final Six in their respective SYBL Playoff Tournaments. Braintree got the better of Westwood's A-11 team, shocking the top-seeded Little Wolverines 10-0 in a tournament semi, while the 12-year-olds were eliminated 4-1 in a Final …

Westwood Little Leaguers Seeing Doctor

End of Williamsport Tournament doesn't end baseball season for Westwood 12-year-olds Brendan Gotti and Nick Giroux.

After Westwood's Williamsport All Star squad's sensational Little League World Series Tournament run ended with a 5-4 loss to Newton West in the Section 3 championship game Monday night at Lyons Field in Newton, one might think the 12-year-olds would take a little time away from the diamond. After all, August is good time for a family vacation and after an already long summer of baseball, including a spell in July with consistent, triple-digit temperatures, who could blame a kid for wanting to go to the beach? You couldn't even really blame a young boy that just wanted to sit in an air conditioned room and play video games for a couple days to let their body recover. Westwood's 12-year-old baseball junkies, however, in perhaps the most …

Westwood District 11 Little League Champs

Four-run fourth inning earns Westwood's Little League team the top spot in the Massachusetts Section 3 Tournament.

Westwood Little League watched their offense explode in the fourth inning to beat Wellesley South, 4-3, in Sunday's Massachusetts District 11 Little League tournament championship game at Kelley Field in Norwood. Westwood advances to play Newton West, the District 10 champion at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lyons Field in Newton, Massachusetts. "This team has been the most selfless team you could ask for. I mean guys not starting, coming in and getting big hits, making big plays in the field, they are a true team," Westwood coach Rob Gotti said. "[The] biggest hit of the game was Marc Ellenberg and he's not one of the regular starters, but he's been hitting the heck out of the ball and I've told him, I said, 'Listen, everybody on this team gets …

Westwood Will Play For District 11 Crown

Brandon Moy mows down Walpole National in the District 11 tournament.

Westwood Little League's 4th-seeded All-Star team punched it ticket to the District 11 Tournament Final with a 5-3 semifinal win over Walpole National Friday night at Norwood's Kelley Field. "That was a dynamite victory," said Westwood manager Rob Gotti. "The boys just executed the plan, they've been working hard all year, doing everything we could ask. You know, they are a bunch of self-less, great kids." Westwood awaits the winner of the Wellesley South and Walpole American semifinal, which was postponed due to rain with Walpole leading 2-0 after three complete innings. That game will resume at noon today at Kelley Field, forcing the final to be bumbed back a day for the second time this week. Brandon Moy pitched a complete game, three-…
