Senior Day ceremony kicks off last game of the season.
Prior to last Tuesday night's boys' lacrosse game against Hopkinton, the senior members of the team were honored in the traditional senior day ceremony. The roughly 15 minute ceremony gave players a chance to be reconized and announce their post high school plans. “The seniors really set the tone for how the season goes. Its been nice to have such a large group of guys who have come in and given their all for the past couple of years," Westwood coach Todd Zahurak said The 13 seniors also had a chance to take photos with family members and as a group. Unfortunately the Wolverines fell to the Hillers 5-8.

Westwood High boys' lacrosse team can't rally from start, falls to Hopkinton on Senior Day.
All it took was one bad quarter to do in the Westwood Wolverines’ boys’ lacrosse team. It was barely seven minutes into the game and the Wolverines found themselves down 4-0 to the Hopkinton Hillers. With a strong offensive showing from the Hillers, the Wolverines (10-8) dropped their regular season finale 8-5 to the Hillers (11-8) on Senior Day Monday night. From the start it was evident that the duo of attacker Phil Pichel and midfielder Andrew Johnson were going to cause trouble for the Wolverines all night. Johnson scored after recovering a ground ball off the draw only 16 seconds into the game, while Pichel picked up two quick more goals including a score while a man up. Johnson received the assists on both Pichel goals. “He plays …

Laura McHoul and Kate Rich committed to advancing in lacrosse at UNH and BC this week.
Two senior lacrosse players at Westwood High School signed the National Letter of Intent this week, as they look to advance in the sport beyond the high school turf. In a small ceremony at the high school on Tuesday, Laura McHoul signed a Letter of Intent to play for the University of New Hampshire, while Kate Rich signed a Letter of Intent for Boston College. High School Principal Sean Bevan, Superintendent John Antonucci and Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Leslie Frank all joined in the ceremony on Tuesday. The lacrosse season is still a few months off, but once the girls hit the turf again in the spring, they'll becoming off a hot season this past year as Division 1 State Champions. It was the girls' third state title in four years, a title…

Construction of the project at Westwood High School began this week.
Basketball and lacrosse players alike can rejoice this fall, as a new basketball court and lacrosse wall will be available for use this fall at Westwood High School. While the wall and court will be connected, they are essentially two separate projects collaborated by the Westwood Basketball Association and Westwood Youth Lacrosse. "I've been wanting to build this (wall) since 1996, when Westwood Youth Lacrosse was formed," said Bob Rich, President of WYL. "Just to have a dedicated space where kids could improve their passing and catching skills. In the past, they've done it in their back yard or against brick walls at different schools." Construction on the new wall and adjacent basketball court - the first court of its kind in the …

The varsity lacrosse athlete is headed to Johns Hopkins University this fall.
When she heard that she was being named as the top lacrosse player in the northeast region earlier this month, Westwood High School 2011 graduate and star lacrosse player Sarah Biron was a little taken back. "They called me when I was on vacation, and I was so surprised and I had no idea they even did that," Biron told Westwood Patch this week. "When I found out that I was named, I was like, 'Oh my God.' It's a huge honor." Biron was named the Northeast Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year in August by U.S. Lacrosse Magazine. And although the mention was a humbling experience, she does not take full claim for the achievement. "The name 'Westwood' carries so much prestige, there's so much associated with it," Biron said. "It's always a big …

The team holds the seventh seed in the playoffs, which start on Tuesday.
It's been an exciting first season for Westwood's new mens' lacrosse team. Having started the summer fresh with practices at Thurston Middle School, the team, dubbed Westwood Aged Wood, is now on its way to the Old New England Lacrosse League (ONELL) playoffs, which begin on August 16. Last week, on Tuesday, August 2, the team won in overtime against the South Coast Silver Sachems, 8-7. Westwood resident Feargal O'Reagoan scored the OT goal to win the game, giving the team a 5-2 record. Aged Wood, however, fell in the final regular season game against the Buzzards Bay Salty Old Buzzards, 13-5 on Tuesday this week. But that doesn't knock the team out of the playoffs; rather, it puts them in the seventh seed, and they'll play away for the …

The designation comes from U.S. Lacrosse Magazine.
Her work certainly paid off during the regular season, but to sweeten the deal, Westwood High School girls' lacrosse player Sarah Biron was recently named the Northeast Player of the Year by U.S. Lacrosse Magazine. Biron, a senior midfielder for Westwood, helped lead the team to a major championship this year, winning the state title for the third time in the last four years with a 15-9 victory over Longmeadow. The U.S. Lacrosse Magazine article highlights how Biron, who is headed to Johns Hopkins University, achieved 95 goals, 32 assists and 130 ground balls for the season. Moreover, Westwood was also named the fourth girls team in the Northeast, falling only behind New York's Northport, St. Anthony's and Garden City teams.
