PHOTO GALLERY: Kids Have a Blast with Fireman's Foam

The annual Fireman's Foam event in which Westwood Fire Department sets up a field of suds for children was another successful summer event this year.

Children gathered to frolic in the foam at Sheehan Elementary School July 11 for this year's annual summer event - Fireman's Foam. The Westwood Fire Department flooded the athletic field with a pile of sudsy bubbles and also set up sprinklers in which the kids played and rinsed off. According to Mike Griffin of the Westwood Recreation Department, this was the 25th annual Fireman's Foam event in Westwood.

Summer Returns in Westwood with Fireman's Foam, Concert Series

The annual summer concert series kicks off in Westwood tonight, while the much-loved "Fireman's Foam" event takes place Wednesday.

Two of Westwood's most enjoyable summer activities are returning this week.  The fun kicks off tonight, Monday, July 9, with the first performance of the 2012 Summer Concert Series. The Westwood Swing Band will take residents on a journey of music from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. by the gazebo at the Westwood Senior Center. The concerts are sponsored by the Westwood Young Women's Club, and are ideal events for families in Westwood and surrounding communities throughout the summer months. In the event of rain, the concerts will be moved to the Islington Community Center.  But the fun doesn't stop there. Westwood's annual Fireman's Foam event is also returning this week. The event, during which children play in a billowing cloud of safe foam created …

Check out today's photo feature and add to our Neighborhood Gallery.

Welcome to the Photo of the Day! Many, though not all, of the photos from this series will come straight from our Neighborhood Gallery, to which you can upload your own photos of events, celebrations and scenes from inside the Westwood borders.  Even though it's been a relatively snow-less winter, the temperatures have been typically chilly at times, especially for February. So today we thought we'd show you a photo from last July, when families and children flocked to the Deerfield Elementary athletic field to engage in the annual event known as Fireman's Foam.  Be sure to check back each day, Monday through Friday, for a new photo and if you've got photos you'd like to submit, send them our way and we'll be sure to feature them!  Also be…

What do you like most about it?

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Fireman's Foam a Big Success Yet Again

Hundreds of children from around the Westwood area showed up for the annual event on Wednesday.

With the recent heat wave rolling through, there couldn't have been a better time than Wednesday to hold the annual Fireman's Foam event. The event, which has been happening in Westwood for over 20 years, is sponsored by the Westwood Recreation Department in conjunction with the Westwood Fire Department. "We couldn't do it without them," said Mike Griffin, Manager of Sports and Fitness Programs for the Westwood Recreation Department. Griffin said that he was amazed by the turnout since the sun had been in and out of the clouds all day. However, with the recent intense heat, hundreds showed up to play in the foam, which was provided by the fire department. Firefighter Gerry Smith was manning the foam machine once again this year; Chief …

Starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the athletic field at Deerfield Elementary will receive its annual dousing of smiles, cheers, and foam. The annual Fireman's Foam event welcomes Westwood families to join in a summer celebration, during which children can play and run around in a safe foam mixture that is provided by the Westwood Fire Department. "This does not happen without the Fire Department," said Mike Griffin, Manager of Fitness Programs for the Westwood Recreation Department, which coordinates the event. "Their continued support of this event year after year is an asset and we thank Chief (William) Scoble and his staff." The foam used in the event is the equivalent of dishwashing soap, and kids are encouraged to wear goggles. Anyone …
