State Police Arrested 1,100 More for OUI in 2012

Massachusetts State Police and local police departments will be out this holiday weekend looking for drunk, impaired and dangerous drivers.

Drunk driving arrests by Massachusetts State Police increased by 30 percent or more than 1,100 drivers, said Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Timothy Allen at a press conference outside of Massachusetts State Police headquarters in Framingham Friday morning. As of Dec. 27, Massachusetts State Police had arrested 4,866 individuals and charged them with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. In 2011, Massachusetts State Police arrested 3,728 individuals. Massachusetts State Police and local police departments will be out in force this holiday weekend looking for drunk, impaired and dangerous drivers on the roads, as part of their Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday campaign. Police Log: Two Arrested for Drunk Driving

Westwood Man Arrested After Hitting Car on Oak Street Jan. 11, 7:18 p.m. - A Westwood man was arrested last week after he hit a car on Oak Street while driving drunk. A Pond Street resident was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The resident was arrested after he struck a 2007 Mitsubishi with his 2006 Ford on Oak Street. The Mitsubishi had been backing into a driveway at the time of the accident. The Ford was towed from the scene. No injuries were reported. South Boston Man Arrested for OUI Jan. 14, 11:34 p.m. - A South Boston resident was arrested after running a red light on Washington Street and hitting a 2012 Mercedes while driving drunk. Westwood Police Cracking Down on Drunk Driving This Weekend

Officers will be on patrol as part of a state-wide crackdown through New Year's Day to ensure safe driving.

The Westwood Police Department is joining a statewide crackdown this weekend on impaired driving through the holiday.  "The goal is to increase visible traffic enforcement over the holidays in hopes that motorists who may have been drinking as part of their celebration, choose not to get behind the wheel," Westwood Public Safety Officer Sgt. Paul Sicard said in a statement Wednesday. "We don't want to see any unnecessary tragedies, especially at this time of the year." The initiative, dubbed "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," is funded through a grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security's Highway Safety Division. Dedham Man Arrested for Driving Drunk on East Street

Westwood Police arrested a Dedham man on Saturday for an alleged second OUI offense on East Street.  Joseph Thissell, 42, of 40 Tarbox St. in Dedham, was charged with a second offense of operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor, as well as negligent operation of a motor vehicle so as to endanger and a marked lanes violation.  Thissell was arrested after police responded to the East Street rotary, where police and Emergency Medical Service officials were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident.  The incident took place on Saturday, Dec. 4 at around 7:40 p.m.
