Several local students are among the 108 that are receiving either a doctorate or a master's degree this Sunday, May 19.
Nearly a dozen area students are among those who will graduate from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine this weekend. The school will graduate 108 students at a ceremony on campus at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19. It will follow Tufts' all-university commencement ceremony to be held at 9 a.m. on Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus. Students at one California high school have challenged a policy that barred 40 teens from a school dance for outfits deemed "too tight."
With prom season almost here, a California high school has earned attention for its dress code. Students in Orange County, CA, have called Capistrano Valley High's policies a "repressed code," after 40 girls were subjected to wardrobe inspections before being admitted to a recent dance. "There were these girls who have beautiful bodies, who are happy with their bodies—to have the principal ask what part of your body isn't the dress tight on, he makes me feel insecure," said senior Lindsay Kamikawa, editor of the school newspaper, who was among the girls prohibited from entering the dance. Due to the expected winter storm on Tuesday, the state announced that the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed.
Since much of Massachusetts is expecting a winter storm on Tuesday, and with it the possibility of numerous school closings or delayed openings, the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced on its website. Originally this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner of …

Racist graffiti found at a school in Concord this week raises the issue of race relations in suburban cities and towns.
When a Concord-Carlisle student found racially charged graffiti in the school's library earlier this week, it set in motion a conversation on race relations as well as an investigation into who may be the culprit. Concord-Carlisle is a school with a reported population of 80 percent white students; the predominantly white student-body has given rise to a conversation whether relatively homogenous populations are more susceptible to racial tensions. Schools in the area range from 63 percent white at Marlborough High to 93 percent white at Hopkinton High, as reported by the Massachusetts Department of Education. A response from the Dover-Sherborn school system can be found here. The Dover-Sherborn Public Schools failed to meet the Sept. 1, 2012 deadline to turn in medical emergency response plans for its schools, according to a recent I-Team report on CBS Boston. Dover was one of 125 Massachusetts schools in 18 districts that did not get the emergency plans in to the state on time, according to the report. Schools are required by law (known as Michael's Law) to submit to the state a plan outlining ways they respond to medical emergencies, including details on a rapid communication system, a list emergency contacts, methods for CPR and first aid training as well as the location of defibrillators.
