How Much Will the School Bus Cost Next Year?

The deadline to register for school bus transportation for the 2013-2014 school year is June 30.

Starting in September, the fee for students who ride the bus to school will change to $180, according to an announcement from Westwood Public Schools.  The additional $180 fee that used to apply to High School students has been eliminated and the annual family cap will be $450 for all students, the announcement said.  Parents who are interested in bus transportation in the fall can visit the Westwood Public Schools website.  The deadline to register for school bus transportation for the 2013-2014 school year is June 30. 

Will Your Kids Read this Summer?

Westwood Public Library is hosting a program for summer readers.

The Westwood Library is holding the 2013 Summer Reading Program for students in preschool through sixth grade, according to the public schools' website. The program—sponsored by Dedham Savings Bank—gives kids the chance to win one of two new Kindles, which is the grand prize. The more they read, the higher their chance of winning. Caller Reports Suspicious Man With Pipe

The Westwood Police Department provided the following information. Patch prints all arrests.

Monday, June 10 10:59 a.m.: Officers served a notice to a Westwood resident to appear at a hearing regarding a restraining order.  6:10 p.m.: Officers responded to a report of a disturbance on Blue Hill Drive after an officer noticed a person pacing back and forth on his lawn with a pipe and hitting his palm with it. The resident was angry that a person keeps driving by his home. Tuesday, June 11 11:33 a.m.: Police received a complaint that one parent violated a restraining order after the person was too close to the house when picking up a child from the bus.  2:17 p.m.: A dog bit a groomer and was placed on a 10-day quarantine. The dog bit the groomer on the forearm when the groomer was trying to put the animal in the bathtub.

Severe Thunderstorms Predicted

Parts of the state also have a flood warning.

Have outdoor plans today? If so, keep an eye to the sky. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of Massachusetts. The Cape and Islands are not in the watch area. A weak cold front is expected to approach Monday afternoon allowing for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop. "This cool front is a slow mover up in northern New England right now," WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner said on his blog. "This slow moving front will settle into our part of the world very late this afternoon bringing a chance of some scattered t-storms." The NWS says a few of the storms will become strong to severe, with large hail, damaging wind gusts and cloud-to-ground lightning. Heavy rainfall is also expected in these…

Teacher of the Year is Mike Mao

Mao has taught at WHS for 14 years.

Mathematics teacher Mike Mao won the Wolverine Teacher of the Year Award, according to hometownweekly.net. Mao, who has taught at the high school for 14 years, was chosen for the Westwood PTO award by student nominations and a vote of administrators and PTO members. For his win, according to the article, Mao received a standing ovation, a plaque and a check for $1,000 "in recognition of his dedication to Westwood High School." According to hometownweekly.net, almost 80 teachers were nominated this year.

Woman Allegedly Steals From Roche. Bros; 2 Assaults at Westwood Lodge Hospital

Saturday, June 8 10:02 a.m.: Stemming from a prior matter, a caller reported two 5-gallon gasoline containers that may have been stolen with other items earlier in the week.  10:13 a.m.: Officers responded to Roche Bros. supermarket after a shopper was taking items without paying for them. A 44-year-old Westwood female was charged with larceny under $250.  1:05 p.m.: Police responded to Westwood Lodge Hospital for a report of a patient-on-patient assault. One patient was struck in the head by another patient.
