PHOTOS, VIDEO: Fireman's Foam a Big Success Yet Again

Hundreds of children from around the Westwood area showed up for the annual event on Wednesday.

The event, which has been happening in Westwood for over 20 years, is sponsored by the  in conjunction with the .

Griffin said that he was amazed by the turnout since the sun had been in and out of the clouds all day. However, with the recent intense heat, hundreds showed up to play in the foam, which was provided by the fire department.

Firefighter Gerry Smith was manning the foam machine once again this year; Chief William Scoble said that Smith is the Public Education Officer, so he has specialized training with these kids.

Griffin also said that Smith loves taking part in the annual event, which was obvious judging by the huge smile on Smith's face.

Smith covered kids from head to toe in foam, laughing along with them as they ran around. Other firefighters helped hose the kids off when they were done.

Scoble's daughter, Kristin, is a Program Coordinator for Westwood Recreation who helped organize the event this year, but Scoble said it wasn't too long ago that she was just a kid involved in the event.

"She used to be jumping around in there," said Scoble as he looked on, watching the hundreds of smiling kids run around.

Griffin was walking around talking to the families who showed up and said that he heard of people coming from towns like Dedham and other areas surrounding Westwood.

Westwood Recreation Director David Burnes said that he was impressed by the great turnout, and actually said that more showed up than he anticipated.

"This is a great family-oriented event," said Burnes. "This was a perfect day for it. The sun is out and it's nice and hot."
