Xaverian Tennis Heads to MIAA State Tournament

The Hawks head to the tournament after a a 5-0 victory over Cohasset on Wednesday.

The Xaverian Bros. boys tennis team (10-6) has qualified for the MIAA State Tournament with a convincing 5-0 win over Cohasset (8-7) at the Adirondack Club in Franklin on Wednesday.

Th accomplishment marks the fourth consecutive year the team has qualified under coach Michael Mowatt, who has been at the helm for five years.

"Considering our schedule, we are definitely ready for the tournament," said Xaverian Head Coach Michael Mowatt. "We are going to sneak up on some teams, because we are better than our record."

Leading the way for the Hawks was senior co-captain Brandon Sepe, who won his match against senior Rob Hill 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Also winning at singles was freshman Jamie Chisholm and sophomore Nate Cohen. All three singles participated in the MIAA State Individuals tournament last weeked at Newton North High School. Both Chisholm and Cohen made it to the round of 32 before falling to higher seeds. Sepe, who was seeded 6th, is continuing this weekend in the round of 16.

Doubles winner for the Hawks were the first doubles team of junior Talis Reks and senior John Coville, who won 6-2, 6-2 while the red hot team of Sean McCarthy and Colin Gilpatric won 6-0, 6-1.

The Hawks will next host the Brockton Boxers at the Brown/Billone Club in Easton on Thursday.
