Xaverian Boys' LAX Falls In High Scoring Opener

Dropping the first six points, the Hawks lost 12-5 at Lincoln-Sudbury on Thursday.

A five-goal performance proved not enough for boys' lacrosse in its season opener.

After falling to a 6-0 deficit, the Hawks were unable to comeback and lost 12-5 to host on Thursday.

“We were a little raw and had some uncertainty on offense,” said Xaverian coach Tim Gardner. “Lincoln-Sudbury moves the ball really well and you can not make mistakes against these guys.”

Warriors' Marc Pace and Connor Hall (both seniors) lead the game in scoring with three goals each. Pace also lead the game in assist with five.

“Marc has great speed, quickness and vision,” said L-S coach Brian Vona. “He has a lot of toughness from playing football, which is a great combination for an attacker.”

A top-left corner goal off a behind-the-net cut from L-S sophomore Sam Chen opened the scoring at 10:36 in the first quarter. The Warriors would go on to score six straight points to open the first half.

The final goal of the streak came with a deep top-corner score from junior Dan Delaney off a behind the net pass from Pace at 4:37 in the second half.

“I was just trying to draw (the defense) in,” said Pace. “If I can beat my guy and get one more guy to step in, I can get people open. When people make good cuts, it is pretty easy.”

Two minutes later, Xaverian sophomore Mike Brennan would juke two defenders and bury a top-corner goal to break the Warriors' run. Lincoln-Sudbury went into the half up 6-1.

“With those one-on-one goals, I do not think any of those goals were from really good offensive sets,” said Gardner. “L-S did a good job interrupting our set motions.”

Opening the half with a Pace score at 6:38, the Warriors outscored the Hawks 4-1 in the first 18 minutes of the second half. A Connor Hall goal, off a behind-the-net cut, put L-S up 10-2 at 9:37 in the fourth quarter.

“We are younger at the midfield than we are at the attack,” said Vona. “(The attack) is going to be a little more fluid these first couple weeks, but I think we are going to initiate a lot from the midfield this year.”

The Hawks responded three and a half minutes later with a one-on-one score by sophomore Liam Driscoll. However, Pace and sophomore teammate Matt Hall assisted each other with one timers to put the Warriors up 12-3 and prevent any comeback.

“It was really nice to see that our offense could click like that,” said Pace. “By possessing the ball, we were able to keep them out of it.”

L-S goalie Dan Shaughnessy had 12 saves with a 80 save percentage. Xaverian senior goalie Chris Fotta had three saves, while junior teammate Anthony Sousa played the second half and amounted two saves.

The Warriors had 27 shots, while the Hawks had 22.

“(Shaughnessy) was not letting anything in and was playing amazing,” said Pace. “We are looking to improve everyday and take each game as one stepping stone towards the next.”

On Saturday L-S travels to play , while Xaverian returns home to face .
