Wolverines Baseball, Softball Wrap Up Seasons

Both baseball and softball fell to the Hillers Thursday afternoon at home.

After clinching their respective spots in the state tournament earlier this week, both the baseball and softball teams closed out their seasons Thursday afternoon at home against Hopkinton.

Softball played the one-loss Hillers tough through the third inning thanks to Leigha Valentine’s three-run triple and an RBI single from Keira Travers, but Hopkinton’s bats were too strong as they pounded out 16 runs in the 16-5 victory.

“It was a really emotional day, especially for our seniors on senior day playing in front of their parents,” said Sherr about the game on Wednesday. “It was also emotional when we work really hard at something and it comes to fruition. It’s a really powerful thing and you hope for the best and when good things happen to good people, it’s a really special time.”

Softball, 10-10, will most likely play a preliminary game on either Wednesday or Thursday this week. Official tournament schedules will be released Tuesday and Tri-Valley League All-Stars will be announced Friday.

The Wolverines' baseball team, meanwhile, saw itself ahead of the Hillers 8-6 in the fourth inning on Thursday, thanks to a Sean Amaru two-run home run, but that’s all the team would get until one in the bottom of the seventh. Hopkinton scored nine unanswered runs and edged out Westwood, 15-9.

“It would’ve been nice to win today, but it obviously wasn’t meant to be and that’s ok,” said baseball coach Brian Whelan. “(Will) Smith and Brendan (Skehill) threw complete games on Monday and Wednesday against two tough teams. Seniors Sean Amaru and Will Smith were named to the TVL All-Star team.

The team, which finished 11-9, will most likely play in a preliminary game on either Wednesday or Thursday this week as well, and baseball tournament schedules will also be released on Tuesday.
