WHS Swimmer Irina Chiulli Named All-American Diver

The incoming high school senior captain was previously named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic pick, a Boston Herald All-Scholastic pick.

One of 's own varsity divers has received some national acclaim.

Irina Chiulli has been named an All-American high school diver for the 2011-2012 season by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA). She was one of only five divers in the Commonwealth to receive the designation.

Chiulli, who also swims backstroke for the WHS girls swim team and has , will be a senior at the start of the 2012-2013 school year in Westwood, helping to lead the team as captain.

The designation of All-American comes on the basis of Chiulli's strong performances at the Massachusetts Southern Regional Diving Championship at MIT in November 2011, where she broke the meet record, and the Massachusetts Division II Diving Championship at Harvard in November 2011, where she won her third state diving title as a junior. 

Both performances were filmed and submitted to the NISCA dive judging panel that re-scores the dives. Chiulli's efforts were compared to that of hundreds of the best high school divers across the nation that also submitted diving tapes.

Chiulli for the third straight season in 2011, and was named Westwood High School's swimming and diving MVP along with Kate Vanasse for a third straight season. Chiulli was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic pick, a Boston Herald All-Scholastic pick and was honored by the Westwood Board of Selectmen for winning the state diving title.

This summer, Chiulli will be competing nationally in the USA and AAU diving events.
