Westwood's Standout Athletes of 2011

A sampling of some of the top sports figures in town from the past year.

In the same vein as , what better way to wrap up 2011 than to showcase some of Westwood's top sports athletes?

As such, below is a list of some standout players and athletes from 2011:

  • Irina Chiulli: A junior at , Chiulli had a phenomenal swimming season this fall. She finished out the season undefeated in diving in 11 Southern Conference dual meets, and on two occasions set new diving records for a dual meet, breaking her own record last year. Moreover, she won the Southern Conference diving championship and the Southern Sectionals diving championship, during which she set a new meet record (her closest competitor was 100 points behind). 

    Chiulli also won the Div. 2 State diving championship, her third straight, and was named a Southern Conference All Star for the third straight season. She was named Westwood High School's swimming and diving MVP along with Kate Vanasse for a third straight season. Chiulli was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic pick, a Boston Herald All-Scholastic pick and was honored by the Westwood Board of Selectmen for winning the state diving title.
  • Andreas Nicolos, Chris Treon, Conor Murphy, Jimmy Curtin, Brett Egizi, Brendan Skehill: All six of these athletes, key figures on the 2010-2011 boys varsity ice hockey team, were named All-Stars by the end of the 2011 season. The first-team All-Stars include: Egizi, Kevin Gavin, Murphy, Jimmy Curtin and Chris Treon. Brendan Skehill and Andreas Nicolos were named to the second team. 
  • Ela Hazar and Kim Egizi: Both varsity players on the girls ice hockey team, Egizi and Hazar were both named All-Stars to finish out the 2011 season as freshmen. Hazar finished with 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in 19 games while Egizi finished with 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 17 games.
  • Sarah Biron: Prior to heading off to Johns Hopkins University this fall, Biron helped lead the girls varsity lacrosse team to a strong victory last season, winning the state title for the third time in the last four years with a  in June. Biron was also named  in August by U.S. Lacrosse Magazine. 
  • Kate Rich and Laura McHoul: Both senior lacrosse players this year, the two girls signed letters of intent to play the sport in college next year. In a small ceremony at the high school in November, McHoul signed a Letter of Intent to play lacrosse for the University of New Hampshire, while Rich signed a Letter of Intent for Boston College.
  • Erik Maloney: Maloney, , helped lead his squad to a win over Scituate 4-2 on Nov. 8 in the MIAA South Division 2 tournament. While the team later fell 3-2 to Canton in a loss that ended the 2011 season for the Wolverines, the team ended with a record of 7-5-6 and reached its goal of making the MIAA tournament. 
  • Ryan Scheib and Tim Duggan:The two athletes from  signed National Letters of Intent to play Division 1 athletics in college this fall. Duggan signed a letter to play baseball at Fairfield University, while Scheib committed to playing lacrosse at Bryant University. Both will serve as captains of their respective teams at Xaverian for the Spring 2012 season. 
  • Mike Welby: While not technically a player, the head coach of the boys varsity ice hockey team , a title certainly worthy of note.
  • Leslie Frank: Head coach of the highly-successful girls lacrosse team in 2011, coaches edition this year. Frank also serves as co-director of the Mass Elite Lacrosse club and has sent 15 athletes to NCAA Division-1 programs in the last 13 years.
