Westwood Little League Wins Section 3 Opener

Moy, Talcott and Gotti combine to two-hit Newton West.

The District 3 champion Westwood Little League team stayed hot with a 6-2 victory over District 10 champion Newton West in their Section 3 tournament opener Thursday night at Lyons Field in Newton.

The story for Westwood was the pitching, which allowed only two hits without giving up an earned run. Brandon Moy pitched the first three innings, surrendering just two unearned runs.

He was relieved by Matthew Talcott, who pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball. Brendan Gotti then came in to strike out the final batter of the game and seal the victory for Westwood.

With Westwood trailing 2-0  in the fourth, Matthew Talcott came up with the bases loaded and came through with a game-tying, two-run double to right-center.

"I felt really good. I really wanted a hit there," said Talcott.

Westwood added some insurance in the fifth with home runs by Gotti and third baseman Ryan McDonald.

"I knew the bats would come around," said Westwood coach Rob Gotti. "They had a lot of timely hitting."

Westwood will play District 9 champion South Boston at 5 p.m. today at Lyons Field, 2210 Commonwealth Ave., Newton, then wrap up round robin play against District 12 champion North Medford at 1 p.m. Saturday at Murphy Field, 290 Albermarle Rd., Newton. The top two teams after round robin play will meet for the Section 3 championship and a spot in the State Tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday at Murphy Field.
