Westwood Girls Win in Lopsided Victory over D-S

The Wolverines scored twice as many points as Dover-Sherborn in a 62-31 win Friday night.

The Westwood girls' varsity basketball team won big last night on the road over Dover-Sherborn, scoring twice as many points as the Raiders with a final tally of 62-31.

Senior Erin Young got the Wolverines off and running, scoring their first eight points of the first quarter.

Westwood employed a full-court press for nearly the entire game, double-teaming anyone who got the ball and forcing errant passes which led to turnovers and easy baskets for the Wolverines.

“We didn’t get better today," said D-S head coach Heather Ernest. "Which is a goal that we have, every day to get better, so it’s pretty disappointing.”

Westwood’s defense was strong throughout the game, leaving little room for error for D-S, which went nearly the entire second quarter without a field goal, until sophomore Julia Perlmutter scored on a layup as time expired.

“I don’t think that we took good shots," Ernest said. "I think that we forced a lot of shots."

Westwood took a 17 point lead into the half with a score of 18-35. In the second half, it was more of the same.

On the Raiders’ first possession of the third quarter, Westwood still pressing, Wolverines senior Emily McGrail stole the ball and then scored on an easy layup, setting the tone for the second half.

“I think that we played right into their hands," Ernest said. "Their defense was aggressive and we freaked out."

Westwood senior Molly McLaughlin led the way for Westwood leading all scorers with 15 points on the night.

Young finished the game with 11 points including three shots from behind the arch.

The Wolverines take on Medway at home on Tuesday at 5 p.m., while D-S takes on Hopkinton at home Monday at 4 p.m.
