Westwood Field Hockey Draws Despite Offensive Outburst

Sarah Biron nets hat trick in Wolverines 5-5 tie with Natick.

It is safe to say that the Wolverines' field hockey team had its best offensive performance of the season at home Monday afternoon against Natick, as they played to a 5-5 draw.

Westwood trailed by three goals early in the first half, but stormed back for three of its own to even to even things up.

Senior forward Sarah Biron started the Westwood comeback as she put in her fourth goal of the year with 7:02 left in the first half. Just under three minutes later, Ani Derderian was in perfect position after taking a corner as she put in a rebound off a Biron shot.

The Derderian-Biron combination struck again with one minute left in the half, only this time Biron put in her second of the game after a rebound on a Derderian near goal.

"This gives us that boost that we're never two goals over our head," said Biron. "We can do five, 10, or however many we need."

"I've never seen my girls dig so deep and fight back like this," said Westwood coach Angela Wilson. "We had yet to play a game scoring three goals, and as I said during halftime, to score three goals within seven minutes speaks volumes to what they are capable of doing."

Junior Bryn MacGillivray kept the scoring going for Westwood in the second half as she weaved through the Natick defense and gave her team the lead with 16:37 left. With the game knotted up at four and just under eleven minutes to go, Biron capped off her day by completing a hat trick and giving Westwood another temporary lead.

Tragedy struck for the Wolverines with just 34 seconds left, however, as Natick fought back and tied things back up for good. Despite the late blunder, Westwood's five goals made up the significant stat, seeing as the team only managed eight total in their first nine games of the season.

"I think that was our best offensive performance by far," said Biron. "We haven't had a game where we scored more than two goals and we scored five today."

Now with the team having a five-goal performance under its belt, coach Wilson
doesn't expect anything less form her girls.

"No, I don't, "Wilson said. "They are capable of scoring five times in one game and three goals in seven minutes and that's what I expect from here on out."
