Westwood Falls in Section 3 Final

Williamsport All Stars stumble against Newton West.

Westwood Little League's Williamsport All Stars fell to Newton West 5-4 in the Section 3 Championship game Monday night at Lyons Field in Newton.

Westwood's run for Williamsport ended with the loss, however the team matched the record for the furthest any Westwood team has gone in Little League.

Westwood jumped out to 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with two walks, two hit batters, and a Jake Beane RBI single.

Newton West got only one run back in the second, thanks to Westwood's defense. Jake Kritzer made a heads up play at second base to throw a runner out at home, which was followed by another runner thrown out on a wild pitch. Newton West tacked on one more in third and three in the fifth, extending the lead to 5-2.

Westwood pitcher Brandon Moy started the comeback in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch. Shortstop Brendan Gotti followed him in on a wild pitch as well, narrowing the deficit to 5-4. That would be all Westwood would get however in the inning and for the game.

Brandon Moy started on the mound for Westwood and allowed just two earned runs in four innings. He was relieved by Matt Talcott, who struck out two in a scoreless fifth.

"They truly played like champions tonight. Moy has been fighting a sinus infection and Talcott woke up with a 102-degree fever," said Westwood manager Rob Gotti.

He expressed how truly proud he was of his players, who he says have learned so much throughout this entire experience.

"We taught them about teamwork, sacrifice, and to 'respect everyone, fear no one' and that's the way they conducted themselves," said Gotti. "Not a lot of people around thought we would be here. We tried to teach them to play hard and to play fair, and that's what they did. They really did."
