Westwood Boys Hockey Take Final Home Victory Over Medway, 2-1

The TVL Champion Westwood Wolverines beat Medway 2-1 on Tuesday night.

In their final regular season home game, the Westwood Wolverines pulled off a close win against TVL rival Medway by a score of 2-1.

In a pre-game ceremony, the Wolverines were presented the Tri-Valley League Trophy by Westwood Athletic Director Karl Fogel. Families of players and fans of the team stood and cheered as Westwood Captains Brett Egizi, Conor Murphy and Chris Treon accepted the award.

The intensity didn’t exactly carry over to the first period, however. Medway came out firing with 12 first period shots compared to Westwood’s five. The Mustangs were all over the ice, taking plenty of shots and laying down some hits.

Senior Right Winger Kevin Walsh had a strong goal from the left side of the net after he took a pass by Diarmuid Gallagher. Brad Adams was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Head Coach Mike Welby noted after the game that he was proud of Walsh's goal and was impressed by the play.

Westwood continued the second-period intensity by taking smart shots and not letting Medway take advantage of power plays. They killed two power plays in the period. Medway got plenty of shots off, but had poor selection and couldn’t put the puck past Treon.

With 19.4 seconds left in the second period, Brendan Skehill scored with an assist by Brendan Dalton. It would prove to be the game winning goal, after neither team could put together a significant scoring opportunity in the third period.

In total, Medway outshot Westwood 35 to 18, but thanks to superior work in the net by Chris Treon, a slightly sluggish Westwood team was able to come away with the win.

“We came out a little sluggish in the first,” Coach Welby said after the game. “Medway’s a great team, and these are teams we will be facing in the playoffs so it was nice to see the guys battle back.”

Medway Head Coach Chris Dwyer said that he it was a good game and that he liked the intensity that his squad brought to the ice. He noted that whenever Westwood and Medway play each other, you can expect a pretty good battle. Also, he said that after a lackluster 3-1 loss the day before, he was pleased with the effort put in on Tuesday night.

“I’m proud of the way the kids came out and played,” said Dwyer. “I don’t like to lose, but today we were out there playing with a lot of intensity.”

The Westwood Wolverines have their last regular season game today at 1 p.m. against Concord Carlisle High School at the Edge Sports Center in Bedford. Seeding for the playoffs will take place on Saturday.
