Missed Opportunities Cost Girls Basketball Regular Season Finale

With Friday's loss, the Wolverines must win both games in next week's tournament in order to qualify for the postseason.

The Westwood varsity girls' basketball team dropped their regular season finale Friday night in Medway, 49-41. The Wolverines led the Mustangs after every quarter but managed only three points in the final frame, ultimately costing them the game.

“We were missing our free throws and it killed us because that’s what it came down to in the end,” said Westwood head coach Brianne Bognanno. “And we missed some layups too, especially in the fourth quarter we had some open looks and just missed them.”

Westwood shot 4-18 from the line and just 1-9 in the second half.

“We hit the majority of our open looks in the first three quarters and when we didn’t, we got to the line, which is what we want, but when you’re not shooting your free throws well, all that hard work of getting to the basket is wasted,” Bognanno said.

The loss drops the Wolverines to 8-10 on the season with two must-win tournament games remaining next week.

The effort was all there for Bognanno’s team in its plan to spoil the Mustang senior night, as she was proud of her girls’ performance from top to bottom.

“They were excited to play tonight and they really wanted it and I was extremely proud of the effort they brought the whole game,” Bognanno said. “We need two out of the next two now, which we were trying to avoid, but the girls are going to go out in the next two games with their heads held high and work hard again.”

Bognanno played just seven girls in the contest, all of whom scored. Emily McGrail led the way with 11 and had another stellar defensive game, contributing eight steals.

Kate Rich nearly put together a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing eight boards. Molly McGlaughlin had seven points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Keira Travers came off the bench to score eight points.

Westwood plays its first tournament game Tuesday against Canton at 7:45 p.m.
