Late Defensive Heroics Save Westwood Post 320

Tuesday night's win brings Westwood to 6-4 overall as the team looks on to host Medfield on Wednesday.

Westwood American Legion Post 320 held on by a score 4-3 in American Legion baseball against Walpole Post 104 Tuesday night. The late heroics for Westwood resulted with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when starting pitcher Ryan Walsh gave up a shot to deep center in a 4-1 ballgame.

Two runs scored on the play, but center-fielder Brendan Skehill tracked it down and started a picture perfect relay, which went Skehill to Manning to Walsh to Florentino, ultimately saving the game.

Walsh went the distance for Westwood, and allowed just one earned run and struck out three in the winning effort. He dug himself into a brief hole in the 5th inning, but was saved by his defense on a huge double play.

"I was just trying to throw strikes and get ground balls," Walsh said. "That double play was huge for me, it bailed me out of the inning."

Westwood Head Coach Dick Paster noted Walsh's efforts during the game, despite a lack of rest for Walsh.

"Ryan pitched a great ballgame," Paster said. "He came back on two days rest and gave us a complete game victory."

First baseman Jason Sementelli led the offense for Westwood, going 2-3 with two runs scored. T.J. Manning (SS), Connor Doonan (DH), Skehill and Mike Jablonski (2B) all had RBIs for Westwood. With the win, Westwood improves to 6-4 overall and will host Medfield tomorrow night.
