Hawks Come Up Short in Scrimmage With Sharon

Xaverian soccer moves closer to making final cuts.

The Xaverian Hawks fell just short in a scrimmage against the Sharon Eagles, falling 3-2 at East Elementary in Sharon.

The match consisted of four, 20-minute quarters and Xaverian mixed and matched varsity and junior varsity players throughout. With one cut already down for Xaverian, this was another game to work certain players out together as well as try out a few new schemes.

"What I was looking for today was how specific individuals would work together or, for example, how a defensive three would play out," said head coach Gary Bowers.

The team was also continuing to work out a new scheme with its forwards.

"The motions weren't too sharp today so we are going to continue working on that throughout the preseason," Bowers added.

Freshman forward Kyle Darrow was one of the bright spots of the offense, as he notched a second quarter goal on a lead pass by fellow freshman Chris Doire.

Doire added a goal of his own on a penalty kick early in fourth after he was held in the box.

Hawks' backup goalie Jason Pink picked up a huge save on a penalty try by Sharon just one period earlier. Xaverian had a few chances down the stretch, but it was Sharon who put the game away late in the quarter on a miscommunication play.

Coach Bowers didn't see the score as meaningful, but found it was the effort of his players that counted.

"The work ethic is there, and the guys that came in in the preseason have done a good job for themselves and have set a good tone," he said. "When we execute what we wanted to execute today, we looked dangerous, and that's a very encouraging thought moving forward."

The team will have one more scrimmage Wednesday afternoon and will be making final cuts either Thursday or Friday.
