Wolverines Advance to Semi-Finals With 4-1 Win Over Bishop Stang

The Westwood boys' varsity hockey team faces Scituate in the semi-finals.

The Westwood Wolverines continued a strong hockey season with a 4-1 win over Bishop Stang Sunday afternoon in Bourne. The win advanced the boys' team into the Semi-Final round of the State Tournament, where they will face Scituate.

Head Coach Mike Welby said he was proud of the effort given by his squad, which came back from an early 1-0 deficit by scoring two in the second period.

The first goal was created by a couple of who have had a great Tournament so far. Brett Egizi scored the goal, which was assisted by Andreas Nicolos. Only a minute later, Kevin Gavin gave Westwood the 2-1 lead.

Gavin, an All Star, returned to the team on Sunday after missing several games due to a jaw injury. Prior to the game, his teammates spoke about how they were anticipating the return of their top scoring threat. He did not disappoint.

In the third period, Sean Condrick scored on a rebounded shot by Brett Egizi. Later in the period, during a penalty kill, Brendan Skehill sent a nice pass to Brendan Dalton for a breakaway goal to make the score 4-1.

Once again, Goaltender of the Year Chris Treon was a force to be reckoned with, saving 27 shots.

"Chris Treon was stellar in net," said Welby.

Senior All Star Defenseman Connor Murphy said that they knew the Bishop Stang game would be a bit different than , and that they boys would have to step up their game. He noted that the team had a few good days of practice and came out strong.

"We were down a goal in the end of the first period, but Coach Welby gave us a solid game plan to work off of and we executed well," said Murphy.

The Wolverines this year and came into the tournament as a 4-seed. Along the way they beat Marian 7-0, and Bishop Stang.

Scituate, on the other hand, has been a bit of a Cindarella story so far. They came into the tournament ranked 17 and knocked off Bourne 5-3, who was ranked number one coming into the tournament.

"Scituate will be a much tougher game than we've already had," said Murphy.

The Semi-Final showdown against Scituate will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thurdsay at the Gallo Arena in Bourne.
