WHS Passes Updated Electronics Policy

The new policy allows for students to use cell phones in designated areas throughout the day.

A new electronics policy for students at Westwood High School has been approved and went into effect this week, according to the school's Twitter feed and update on the high school's website.

The new policy was proposed by student legislators and was one Westwood High School Principal Sean Bevan had been considering leading up to its approval.

The basis of the new policy states that certain functions of celluary phones are acceptable in the high school depending on location and circumstances, such as part of an educational lesson or in designated areas throughout the school.

The proposal to change the policy came after students legislators found the old policy to be obsolete, where technology has advanced exponentially over the years and cell phones are, by many standards, considered to be a necessity.

"The old language basically said students are not permitted to carry cellular phones on them during the day," Bevan told Westwood Patch last month. "That wasn't accurate. Kids carry cell phones; parents prefer that they do for a million reasons."

The new policy went into effect on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
