Westwood's Basement After School Program Now Open for Registration

The program begins with the start of school on September 7.

The Westwood Recreation Department has announced that it is now accepting registration for the Basement After School Program.

The program takes place at the Islington Community Center, Monday through Thursday between September 7, 2010 and June 20, 2011, and is also available during February and April Vacation weeks, as well as during staff development days, for an additional fee. The program is closed during all holidays and snow days.

The program is geared toward offering a quality after school program for students in grades 6 through 8 that is fun, safe and supervised.

Afternoons include socializing with friends, as well as time to spend on homework, or to enjoy a snack and other activities. Students are required to work on homework during an hour-long quiet, study session each day during the program. Computers with internet access, as well as academic books and other homework tools, will be provided.

Snacks will be provided on a daily basis with water and juice. Parents should note that the Islington Community Center is a peanut- and nut-free environment.

At the end of the school day, students who are involved with the program are transported by bus from the Thurston Middle School to the Islington Community Center. In the case that busses are too crowded, additional students will be transported by the Recreation Department van.

More information will be provided once the Westwood School Department has finalized the 2010-2011 bus routes, and families who do not have a bus contact will be charged an additional fee to cover the bus. The fee, however, will be deferred until October.

School dismissal and early release dismissal are both at 6 p.m.

Tuition for the program will be based on the full school year, and is divided into 10 equal payments.
