Westwood School Officials Pleased With MCAS Results

While MCAS results were up and down across the state, Westwood school officials were pleased with how the school system faired.

With the release of MCAS results this week, scores showed an up and down trend throughout the state. Westwood Schools faired well and the school system's performance earned praise from Superintendent John Antonucci.

"At first glance we are very pleased with the results," said Antonucci. "What this shows is that we are absolutely performing at a high level relative to the rest of the state, and that we are improving year to year. That is what's most important."

Antonucci said that he had seen the results, but major analysis would be taking place over the course of the next few weeks. He explained that a large team of teachers and administrators would be looking over the results and creating a report that he said would be presented at the School Committee meeting in October.

Moreover, even at a quick glance Westwood's MCAS results are relatively high when compared to other nearby towns.

According to information from the Massachusetts Department of Education's website, 89 percent of Westwood students placed at or above proficient. This was comparable to neighboring towns like Medfield, which had 86 percent at or above proficient.

Westwood's Downey School had 53 percent of its students place in the top category in 4th grade mathematics. This was fifth highest in the state, according to Boston.com.

In terms of high school passing rates, 98 percent of Westwood High School students passed in English and Math, and 97 percent in Science and Technology. These scores were identical to 2009.

Some numbers that stand out include grade 10 mathematics, where 76 percent of the students placed advanced. This was compared to the state average of 50 percent. Grade 5 mathematics also had high scores with 55 percent of the grade placing in advanced. This is far above the state average of 25 percent.

Grade 10 English was a bit of an enigma. Forty-six percent of the students placed in the advanced category, which was 10 percent lower than in 2009. However, 48 percent were proficient, which is nine percent higher than last year.

Grade 7 Mathematics had five percent higher in the advanced category this year with 27 percent. There was also five percent less placing in the "needs improvement" category and one percent less in Warning.
