School Committee Commends Division 3 Champion Golf Team

The Westwood Varsity Golf team was recognized by the School Committee for being named Division 3 Championships.

The Westwood Varsity golf team was and were recognized for their efforts at the most recent School Committee meeting last week.

Head Coach Matt Gillis was named Division 3 Coach of the Year and Patrick Brody was named to the Globe All-Scholastic Team.

Superintendent John Antonucci congratulated the team, which went 15-3 making them second in the Tri-Valley League. The team won the TVL tournament by five strokes and eventually beat league rival Medfield to win the State Championship.

Gillis said that competition in the TVL is incredible, with four teams advancing to the State Championship coming from the league.

“A lot has to go right, but we clearly have great talent on this team, and wonderful coaching as well,” said Antonucci, who noted that to get to this point, the team needed 34 wins in a head to head match-up.

He added that he saw that the team had a great, unique culture that included "busting of chops" and a true friendship between players.

Gillis agreed with this, saying that he is very proud of how the guys went out and played, as well as the way they represented the Town of Westwood.

“The memories I have through this year, from tryouts to the end of the year, have been outstanding,” said Gillis.
