PHOTOS, VIDEO: Students Close Out Week with Latin Christmas Carols

Ted Zarrow's Latin IV class sang Christmas carols in Latin to students and staff members around WHS on Friday.

At the end of the school week leading up to holiday break, students and staff at were treated to Latin Christmas carols by Ted Zarrow's Latin IV class.

This is the fifth annual performance by Zarrow's class. Zarrow explained that in Latin III, one of the major projects at the beginning of the year is to create Latin adaptations of modern songs to allow students to appreciate the differences between Latin and English expressions. The original idea for creating Christmas carols was an offshoot of this idea.

"I was able to find some Latin holiday carols both in books and online, but most of the songs that we perform have been put into Latin either by myself or by my students, and we add to the list each year," explained Zarrow. "The real trick is to 'sync-up' the Latin with the actual number of English syllables in the original songs."
