Five April Vacation Ideas in Westwood

A roundup of tips for students on what to do during their April Vacation this week.

It’s day two of April Vacation, and there is more to do around the Westwood area that one might think.

The forecast this week is looking to be all over the place, from sun and warmth to chilly air and rain. But three out of the five days call for bright and sunny weather.

For students without plans this week, those who are looking to get away from the television or video game system and get outside, there are plenty of ideas on how to spend your time.

  • Hale Reservation is offering an April Vacation program for students in grades one through six. While registration may be closed, Development Director Paula McLaughlin said that the Reservation's trails are open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. until dusk.
  • Also, on Saturday, April 30, a Hale will host a 5K run as part of its ongoing race series. This week may be a good chance for those interested to train for the run, or just get a work out by walking through the many trails.
  • In conjunction with the Russell Downs Baseball Tournament being held this week, McLaughlin said that a clinic will be put on for kids by coaches.

Fishing at :

One of the best things about Spring time is that the snow is gone, the ice has melted, and the waters of Buckmaster Pond have returned to their rippling currents. And for fishing enthusiasts, now is the time to get out on the water; the sport can be done in most types of weather. Or, if you don’t care about catching fish and just want a place to relax and throw a line, this is a perfect spot for it as well. For fishers under 15 years of age, a permit isn't needed for that activity. Otherwise, a permit costs $10 for the entire year.

Information about permitting is found here.

Cheer on your Wolverines: There are a number of spring sporting events taking place, giving you the perfect chance to root on your buddies. There are a couple baseball games, with the Wolverines involved in the Russell Downes Baseball Tournament. There are also a couple lacrosse games and a softball game coming up this week. Have a backyard BBQ:

Another great thing about Spring, the temperatures rise and the atmosphere falls into place for the perfect barbecuing environment. This can be done right in your back yard. There’s not much better than a relaxing game of whiffle ball, or if you are in the competitive mood, get some friends together for some two hand touch football. Just remember to be safe when using a grill.

For when it rains, check out a new movie:

It’s April in New England, so it goes without saying that rain is likely in the forecast. For these gloomier days, a movie is the perfect remedy, and in Legacy Place, is right around the corner. The theater offers a variety of seating options, not to mention various eateries at which to get the perfect snack. For a complete listing of movies and showtimes, click here.
