Eighth Graders Dance the Night Away

Thurston Middle School hosted a semi formal dance for 8th grade students June 10.

A group effort and a lot of involved parents made the 8th Grade Semi Formal a resounding success on Friday night.

The carnival theme was evident in every part of the impressively-decorated space.

With a clown mouth beckoning students to enter, to the gym with roller coaster and carnival ride scenes plastering the walls, to the cafeteria with more food, games, and entertainment than one might expect at a school dance, let alone a carnival, it was clear that a lot of work and planning went into the event.

According to Kelly Harrington, one of the parents chaperoning the dance, "The eight grade parents do everything from hiring the entertainment to making a lot of the decorations."

While the event typically reuse a lot of the decorations from Westwood High School's , the theme changes every year.

Claire Gotti and Elizabeth Phillips spearheaded a committee that organized everything and started planning as early as September of last year for the event.

"It's a great time for the kids," said one of the seventh grade parental chaperone.
