Committee Proposes Solutions to Improve Math Curriculum in Westwood Schools

Mathematics Review Committee offers suggestions to help Westwood School District students and teachers.

The K-12 Mathematics Review Committee for Westwood considered its options, as it formulated ways to improve the school's district's math program. The group suggested possible initiatives to improve the program at Thursday's School Committee meeting.

Westwood School District K-12 Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development Dr. Avian Green provided insight on the issues facing the math program during a presentation to School Committee members. Green emphasized finding the best solutions for students and teachers.

"We identify the best practices in a number of ways," Green said. "We look not only at what we're doing, but where we should be going."

Green stressed the importance of aligning Westwood's math program with the revised Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics. The Commonwealth's new framework incorporates the Common Core Standards for Mathematics with state standards.

The Bay State will work with the Westwood School District as the framework is implemented over the next several years.

"I honestly think in the next few years things are gonna be rolling as we align to the new Massachusetts framework," math teacher Marcie Abramson said.

Green suggested improving the math program by expanding the district's use of student assessments while providing additional assistance to struggling math students. Keeping students involved in the process could have a tremendous impact, she said.

"It's going to change the playing field dramatically," Green said. "There's no doubt about it."

But Abramason noted parents play an important role in their children's education as well.

"Math is just as important as reading," Abramson said. "We need to get parents to be part of our team."

Westwood School Technology Director Steve Ouellette acknowledged scientific advancements could help students master difficult mathematical concepts while understanding their applications as well. Bringing new technology to the classroom could enhance the learning experience for students and teachers.

"There's a lot of opportunities in technology and the way it's come along," Ouellette said.

Green emphasized it will take a team effort to provide long-term improvement to the district's math program.

"We're working hard with all department at all levels," Green said.
